Electronics I wait for vs buy today: TVs, laptops, headphones, vacuums

The short version

For all four, the same test applies: if the price matches the lowest you can verify, waiting is a guess. The sections below show where each pattern comes from.

TVs: the model-year cycle is real

TVs run on a yearly model cycle. LG is a clean example. It showed its 2026 OLED evo G6 at CES in Las Vegas in January 2026. In March it opened US pre-orders for the G6 and C6, with retail availability starting that month. Consumer Reports says the first wave of new-year models reaches stores in spring.

Consumer Reports explains what that cycle does to prices. Its TV buying guide gives an example of a 65-inch set that costs $1,100 at launch, drops to $880 a few months later, and can cost as little as $650 the following year, as stores clear room for new models. It names three windows:

• Black Friday for the deepest discounts.
• “Big Game” promotions about two weeks before the Super Bowl, for the second-best.
• Spring, when the first new models arrive and stores clear out older sets.

Wait if your current TV works and one of those windows is close. If you do not need the newest panel, last year’s model during the spring clearout is the one to watch.

Buy now if your TV is broken, the price matches the lowest you can verify, or the outgoing model is being cleared and is still in stock in the size you want. Clearance stock runs out, and in the Consumer Reports example a new set starts at the top of its own price curve.

Laptops: back-to-school and Black Friday

Laptops have two big windows. Consumer Reports says laptops and computers tend to be on sale all through August for back-to-school. It also lists laptops among the products discounted in November, the month of Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

One detail from its back-to-school coverage is worth knowing. The Consumer Reports deals editor wrote that last year, sales came and went from July through September, but the discounts tended to stay about the same. So waiting inside that window may not get you much.

The holiday numbers are worth knowing too. Adobe Analytics reported that online electronics discounts peaked at 30.9% off listed price during the 2025 holiday season (Nov 1 to Dec 31). Its Cyber Monday report said electronics discounts peaked at 31% off listed price that day. Two caveats: that is one figure for a whole category, not your model, and “listed price” is the store’s own number. A list price can be padded, which is why I wrote how I tell a real discount from a fake one.

Wait if your laptop still works and you can hold out until late November. In 2026, Black Friday is Friday, November 27 and Cyber Monday is Monday, November 30.

Buy now if a student needs it before classes start, or you need it for work. Also check the maker’s newsroom before a big purchase. If a successor has been announced, the current model may go on clearance, and that can be the better buy.

Headphones: discounted often, especially at the holidays

Headphones go on sale a lot around the holidays. Consumer Reports calls them a popular holiday gift and lists them among its November discount picks and again in December, noting you can often find good deals on top models in both months.

A new model does not always make the category cheaper. Sony announced the WH-1000XM6 on May 15, 2025 at $449.99. That was $50 more than the WH-1000XM5’s list price. When a successor lands, the older model can be the deal while it lasts, but the new one may cost more, not less.

Wait if they are a gift or a nice-to-have and November is close.

Buy now if yours broke and you use them every day. If you use them every day, I would not go weeks without them to chase a holiday discount.

Vacuums: August and the holidays

Consumer Reports says vacuums, robot vacuums included, tend to fall in price in August. It points to early Labor Day sales and back-to-school sales aimed at dorm shoppers. It lists vacuums again in November and December, when it says you will find lots of discounts on top models around the holidays.

One honest caveat: Consumer Reports talks about vacuums as a group. It does not break out cordless stick vacuums on their own, so I would not assume a cordless model follows the pattern exactly.

Wait if your vacuum works and Labor Day or the holidays are near.

Buy now if it died, or the price matches the lowest you can verify.

How to check that today’s price is the low one

“The lowest you can verify” is the part that does the work. Here is how to check it yourself.

• On Amazon, use the Price History link on the product page, next to the price. Amazon says it shows 30, 90 and up to 365 days of prices. That is Amazon’s own tool. I do not track Amazon prices and I do not show Amazon price history here.
• Across other stores, Google’s price insights say whether a price is low, typical or high, and how it changed in recent months. Google bases the typical price on sellers across the web and says the feature does not predict future prices. It is for US shoppers.
• Before you pay, confirm the total in your cart. Shipping, tax and a coupon that did not apply can change the answer.

Buying at Best Buy before a sale

If you need something now but a sale might be coming, Best Buy’s own policy helps. Its Price Match Guarantee says that if Best Buy lowers its store, online or app price during the return and exchange period, it will match the lower price when you ask.

Its return policy gives most products 15 days, or 60 days for My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members. The clock starts the day you receive the product.

Read the fine print. The guarantee excludes Marketplace items, clearance, open-box and refurbished products, and items marked as Black Friday pricing, among other exclusions. Competitor price matches are off from the Thursday before Thanksgiving through the Monday after. Terms can change, so check the current page before you count on it. How this ties to my Top 10
